Import a Swiss bank statement and check your expenses

A bank statement can save a lot of typing, but it still needs a review. The important checks are the account, period, currency, direction of each payment and whether the opening and closing balances reconcile.

Choose the right export

Download a statement for one account and a clearly defined period from your e-banking portal. Keep the original file so you can compare it with the import review. Avoid combining accounts or currencies in a single import.

Ausgaben.ch supports text-based PDF statements, CSV exports and camt.053 XML. PDF layouts differ between banks and export formats, including within Raiffeisen. If text cannot be selected or the table is not recognised, try a structured CSV or camt.053 export. There is no automatic connection to your bank.

Review suggestions before saving

Open Import statement from the dashboard, select the destination account and upload the file. Check the suggested entries against the statement before confirming. Categories are suggestions and can be changed.

  • Check dates and whether each amount is an expense or income.
  • Check that the statement currency matches the account.
  • Identify transfers between your own accounts so they do not inflate income or spending.
  • Review duplicate warnings, especially if import periods overlap.
  • Inspect refunds and card settlements; do not count a purchase again when paying the card bill.

Separate transactions from the starting balance

A list of transactions shows changes during the period. It does not necessarily show all the money that was already in the account. A zero opening balance can therefore produce a correct net change but an incorrect account total.

When the import offers an opening-balance adjustment, compare it with the original statement and confirm it explicitly. Do not add the opening balance as salary or other income. If the figures do not reconcile, check the period, missing pages, skipped entries and transfers before saving.

Keep control of the result

Statement parsing runs in your browser. After confirmation, financial records are encrypted on your device before being stored. Keep your own copy of the original statement if you need it later.

Use Settings → Data to download transaction CSV or a personal JSON export. The JSON file is unencrypted, so store it privately. You can also clear a household’s finances or delete your account; read the confirmation carefully when a household is shared.

Common questions

Can I upload a scanned statement?

The statement importer needs readable text and a recognised transaction layout. A scan may not provide either. Use a text-based PDF, CSV or camt.053 export if available.

Will the same statement create duplicate expenses?

The review flags recognised duplicates, but you should still compare overlapping periods and selected entries. Confirm only the entries you intend to add.
